The Wisp –  luxurious woodland cabin

Distance from The Fountain: 24 minutes walk / 3 minutes drive
Location: Bines Green, Partridge Green, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 8EH

When you’re sitting in the garden outside The Wisp, with the BBQ going and the sun setting over the meadow, it’s hard to believe you’re not that far from south London. With the city behind you, all that lies in front is as much adventure or relaxation as you want. Hike the South Downs Way, bike the Southdown Link, head to the South coast for beaches, cafés and watersports or kayak on the river Adur, coming back pleasantly exhausted to sink into the wood-fired hot tub or fire up the projector and popcorn machine for movie night. Or go no further than the independent bookshop down the road in Steyning, maybe a farmer’s market or a fish and chip shop, before you settle in for a day of dozing and reading surrounded by nature. If you’re quiet, you might spot the deer who sometimes sneak up from the nearby woods, and hear barn owls hunting at dawn and dusk. You won’t miss the stars though, as the surrounding area is a Dark Sky reserve and lying on the deck stargazing on a clear night is a blessing.

Gold Top Barn

Distance from The Fountain: 18 minutes walk / 2 minutes drive
Location: Northblows, Partridge Green, Horsham, West Sussex, RH13 8EH

After 100 years as a dairy and cow barn, Gold Top has been transformed into a place to stay that has a contemporary feel and all your creature comforts, but with one hoof planted in its agricultural past. There are milk churn bedside tables and recording jar lampshades, raw plaster walls and sanded floorboards, but funky gold lights and coloured tiling and the bed is about as far from a pile of straw as you can imagine – a French-style super king of unbelievable comfort. The kitchen boasts a full size fridge/freezer, modern oven and even a dishwasher, while the bathroom has both shower and double-ended bath. You can look out over the fields from the mezzanine (where you’ll find the other double bed), sink into the sofa and enjoy the glow of the wood burner or soak in your private wood fired hot tub with views across the fields. A short wander through Gold Top’s garden will lead you to a twinkly lit bridge, where you’ll find yourself in your very own meadow. There are a few other spaces at Northblows and you’ll probably see other guests as you’re coming and going, but it’s a wonderful spot for escaping the city and getting some peace and quiet.
